Why should I read this?
  • There are a few things you need to do BEFORE YOU COME TO COLLEGE.
  • For those in College Halls, it is a REQUIREMENT of your conditions of residence that you are registered with a local GP Your warden will want to see confirmation of this from us.
  • It is highly recommended that all students register with a doctor whilst at university:
  • Even if you do not usually need to see your doctor. Most people are ill at some point whilst at College. If you register now we will be able to be prepared for the time you need us. We can only provide a limited service to those who only come to us when they are ill.
  • If you have a chronic condition you will need to register with a doctor to receive ongoing care and medication. If you are then unwell with this illness we will already know your history.
  • If you are on medication you will need to register to obtain more before you run out.
  • Knowing our population also helps us plan our services to provide what YOU need.
But I like my current GP...

Many people consider staying with their current GP, who may have known them for years. This is particularly the case when “home” is in London - people think they can just pop home if they are ill. It is highly recommended that you do not do this. Why?

  • you will be at college most of the year
  • if you just want some advice you may not be able to find the time to travel home (term time is busy!)
  • if you are unwell you may not want to travel
  • if there is an emergency we will inevitably end up being involved
  • The RCM does not officially recognise other GPs for the purposes of formal medical certification of illness/applications for medical places in Halls etc
  • Your home GP will not be able to provide you emergency out-of-hours (24hr) care unless you are actually living in their area at the time
  • We will not be able to provide you emergency out-of-hours (24hr) care unless you have already registered with us
Who can register with us?

The vast majority of students will live in our extended catchment area, allowing them to register with us. Check you can do so here ALL students of the Royal College of Music can use our services during our opening hours. The Health Centre and the Royal College of Music 
Although we have a close relationship with the Royal College of Music, we are a confidential service. All the members of our team operate by the same policy on confidentiality, and consider this paramount. Apart from some very rare circumstances where a patient is unwell enough to be a danger to themselves or others, we will not share any information you give us with any third party, including any member of College, without your consent.

On the other hand, as we have a close relationship with College, we are in a unique position to be able to liaise with them on your behalf, to support time off due to sickness etc. No other doctor (GP/hospital consultant/other) can officially do this. The Royal College of Music will generally not accept letters of recommendations/support unless they are from this Health Centre.

The name “Imperial College Health Centre” dates from the time we used to be a department of Imperial College. However nowadays we are an independent NHS GP practice and, like all NHS GPs, register patients who live locally. Consequently, as well as our services to Imperial College, we look after a significant number of local residents and families.

Our services to the Royal College of Music are an important part of our work. We are pleased to have a strong relationship with the Royal College of Music, and have many years of experience of looking after their students and staff, who often have very specialist problems due to the nature of their work.
What to do next - Check list 
AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
  1. Visit our registration pages and download the appropriate forms to register:
  2. a. First year undergraduates should click here (There are 5 forms)
    b. Other students should use this page to work out whether they are eligible to register, and follow the appropriate link to register or join.

    Those in Halls will find paper copies of the forms on their beds when they arrive – this is only in case you have forgotten to bring them – there is no need to complete the forms twice.

  3. Complete the forms carefully. Ask your parents to help! Consider asking your home GP for details.
  4. Check you have had the appropriate student vaccinations.
  5. Bring your completed forms to the registration fair.
    At our stall there, we be able to check your forms and arrange your registration. This will be a quick an easy process if you have followed these instructions carefully.
If you miss us, you can come to the Health Centre (number 31 on this map) any time during opening hours to register. During the first few weeks of term we will be holding extra clinics in order to process these registrations quickly. Of course, in the unlikely event that you can’t make it in the first 2 weeks, feel free to come along at any time and we will do our best to help you.
